How Do I Take My Thyroid Support Supplement?

Dr. Berglund has just given you a supplement designed to help your thyroid function properly.

** Warning. Individuals not under the care of an experienced natural practitioner (such as a naturopath or chiropractic internist (DABCI)) should not attempt to self treat. Management of hyperthyroidism (high thyroid), hypothyroidism (low thyroid), and autoimmune thyroiditis can be challenging and often confusing to those aren't experienced or trained in restoration of the thyroid and those affecting systems. Those individuals looking for this approach should seek proper care of an appropriate professional.

Initial Dosage(s) for tablets/capsules:

Start out by taking one tablet/capsule with breakfast and one with lunch. Stay at this dosage for two days and then increase your dosage to two with breakfast and two with lunch. Again, stay at this dosage for two days and then move up to three with breakfast and three with lunch. Stay at that dosage until your next visit with Dr. Berglund.

If at any time you feel "hyperthyroid" symptoms, reduce your dosage to the previous day's dose. For instance, if you feel hyperthyroid symptoms while taking three in the morning and three at lunch, simply reduce your dosage to two and two until your next visit with Dr. Berglund. Be sure to always take your thyroid supplements with food. Taking them on an empty stomach will cause you to absorb them too quickly causing a "thyroid rush" (a short burst of hyperthyroid symptoms).

The only time you should take a dinner dose of any thyroid supplement is if you are directed to do so by Dr. Berglund or you know that stimulants like caffeine (there is no caffeine in any of the supplements but the stimulatory response of thyroid can "feel" similar) do not affect your sleep. Properly administered, a normalized thyroid will help the body sleep better but causing a rise in the thyroid hormones before sleep can, in some people, cause them to have difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep.

Thyroid Supplementation FYI

Once you are feeling better and your thyroid is under control, please know that it's still very important to come in a few times per year to have Dr. Berglund evaluate you on your supplements. The goal of treating you naturally is to restore your systems. In response to eating right and providing support to the thyroid, many thyroids get stronger and the dose you've been on for a while can cause hyperthyroid symptoms. This may require the dosage to be lowered or even switch you to a different brand/type of supplement.

Dr. Berglund wants to teach you how to take good care of yourself. But he also wants to make sure any changes you make are what's best for your body.

Initial Dosage(s) for liquids/tinctures:

Start out by taking one dropper (hold the Thyroid Support, Thyroid Energizer, or Thyroid Liquessence) in your mouth for at least 10 seconds) with either breakfast OR lunch. Stay at this dosage for two days and then increase your dosage one dropper at breakfast and one at lunch. Again, stay at this dosage for two days and then move up to third time per day. Stay at that dosage until your next visit with Dr. Berglund.

If at any time you feel "hyperthyroid" symptoms reduce your dosage to the previous day's dose or reduce the dosage from a dropper to just 3 drops at a time to see if that helps. These liquids do not have to be taken with meals.

Watch how close you take your dosage to your sleep time. Dr. Berglund usually tells people to use the same criteria they might use for drinking caffeinated beverages (there is no caffeine in any of the supplements but the stimulatory response of thyroid can "feel" similar). If they know they can't do a caffeinated beverage after 5 pm because it'll affect their sleep, the same holds true for these thyroid boosting supplements. If you know you can do caffeine all the way up to your bedtime, then there are no time restrictions on when your last dosage should be.
